My Career in Inter- and Multi-Disciplinary Research

報告摘要：

報告將重點介紹Roberto Ballarini教授與其學生在過去四十年中，對于民用、機械、航空航天、材料、化學、生物醫學和電氣工程相關問題進行的研究。所選擇的示例包括鋼筋混凝土結構的漸進式倒塌；利用微機電系統設備作為平臺在微米和納米尺度上進行材料測試；通過反向工程軟體動物殼體進行仿生復合結構設計；連接量子力學、分子動力學和連續介質力學的計算材料科學等相關話題。

I will highlight the research my students and I have conducted over the past four decades on problems associated with civil, mechanical, aerospace, materials, chemical, biomedical, and electrical engineering. The illustrative examples include topics in progressive collapse of reinforced concrete structures¹; the use of microelectromechanical systems devices as platforms for materials testing at micrometer and nanometer scales²; bioinspired design of composite structures through the reverse engineering of the shells of mollusks³; computational materials science that bridges quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics⁴; and others as time allows.

主講人簡介：

Roberto Ballarini教授是休斯頓大學卡倫工程學院土木與環境工程系主任，曾任美國明尼蘇達大學（University of Minnesota）土木工程系主任。1980年，他取得紐約城市大學（City College of New York）土木工程學士學位，并于1981年和1985年分別獲得美國西北大學（Northwestern University）碩士和博士學位。他的研究成果涉及多個領域，包括土木、機械、航空、生物醫學、化學、材料工程等領域的材料和結構的理論力學實驗和計算。Roberto Ballarini于2019年被授予Raymond D. Mindlin獎章（哥倫比亞大學為紀念已故學者、美國力學家Raymond D. Mindlin而設置），并于2021年獲評美國土木工程師學會（ASCE）的杰出人物。
